I would like to do my WP3 assignment on strategies to become more energy efficient through reducing water consumption. I found an academic, peer reviewed article by Carol Mass entitled Shower with a Friend: How Conserving the Wet Stuff Cascades into Megawatt Savings. The article explains how reducing water use, especially the use of hot water, also reduces the amount of energy we consume. Shower with a Friend then goes on to explore all the different ways one can reduce their water consumption.
In order to convey the information presented in Shower with a Friend to a younger audience, I plan to make a comic strip about two talking animals. The first character will be a talking goldfish named “Gary the Goldfish” who shows how his habitat in his lake is being affected by humans’ overconsumption of water. The other character will be a talking toucan named “Tina the Toucan” who shows how both her environment in the rainforest and the atmosphere of the earth are being affected by humans’ overconsumption of energy. After exposing the children to the negative effects of energy and water overuse, both Gary the Goldfish and Tina the Toucan will then meet up to educate the children on ways they can reduce their water consumption (like, for example, reducing their shower time or turning off the faucet while brushing their teeth). This will follow the conventions of a piece geared toward children because it will include talking animals, bright colors, and illustrations. I will also stick to very simple vocabulary and short sentences to ensure that the material is kid-friendly. I think including Gary the Goldfish and Tina the Toucan makes the content kid-friendly and will inspire children to want to conserve water because children are typically sympathetic towards animals and will want to help conserve their habitats. I will also do my best to give the story a light-hearted tone and keep it as not-scary as possible so I don't scare the younger audience.
In order to convey the information presented in Shower with a Friend to an adult audience, I am going to write a speech as if it were going to be given by Jerry Brown, encouraging Californians to reduce their water consumption in light of the drought. I will start by outlining the massive effects the California drought has had on California; this will contribute to a more serious tone (compared to the story involving Tina the Toucan) because the consequences are not sugar-coated or given less gravity by distracting, talking animals or bright colors. The serious tone will cater to an adult audience because there is no need to try to not scare the audience, as we did with the younger audience. I will then outline the ways Californians can reduce their water consumption and urge voters to vote for local candidates who care about environmentalist issues.
Wow, let me first just say that your attention to detail is impressive ! You really seem to have developed full and complete ideas for this project already. I love your idea for your children's book, i'm my question for you is this. How will you make this issue important to the children? What will your characters do to make the issue relatable to their generation? As for your piece geared towards your more mature audience, how will you bring the issue to their attention in a way that is different from all of the other calls to action presented in today's news? What will set your article apart ? I believe you have some very promising material and Think that with more elaboration then you have already done, this piece will be an eye-grabber.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy this idea. You're child's translation reminds me of a project I used to do in elementary school where we would draw comic-like poster for conserving water and whatever kid had the best would win tickets to something. The idea of using animals is smart because it takes away that concept of kids showering with others which some parents my find inappropriate. Doing a comic strip is tough though because either you're going to have to draw it or describe it in great length with would make it longer than most children's pieces would be. The speech is a really good idea too and making said by one of our state officials is really funny. You should look up words or phrases that Jerry Brown uses frequently so that you can incorporate them into your own work and make it very realistic. Good luck and great Ideas!!
ReplyDeleteI like how your WP3 is about an issue that affects all of us in modern society, which is the preservation of water and limiting the amount that we waste. It is very interesting how you plan to write portray this information towards kids in a way of telling a story. I feel like if you choose this path it would be important to choose which information to include and which is not relevant to a children’s story. I also like how you thought of the names for the characters and I could also see where you’re going with the story telling. Good work and good luck!
ReplyDeleteI think your topic is really thought out well, it seems as though you planned it out thoroughly. I think your idea about a comic strip is super cute and will definitely apply to a younger audience. You put a lot of detail into the story and it seems very lively. I really love your approach of exposing the children to the negative effects first – nice move. I like that you described some of the conventions you will be using such as simple vocabulary and short sentences. I think a light-hearted tone is perfect for this genre, and I love your reasoning that it’s so you won’t scare your audience haha. Your second genre is super unique! I wouldn’t have thought of this, the perspective should be interesting to read about. I also love that you compared your tone to that of the other genre about the Toucan. This was one of the most creative ideas I’ve read so far.
ReplyDeleteI really liked you're explanation, organization, and overall idea for this WP. I personally thought that using just 3 paragraphs to explain the whole WP was extremely intelligent, and kind of highlights how sometimes the most simple ideas are the most effective. I think that both your idea for the younger audience and for the older audience was very detailed and you clearly have a good idea of what you are trying to do. I think with your ideas you will ace this WP. I think the article you read also seems interesting which will help make your WP more interesting as well! I'm impressed with how well you convey your ideas and clearly explain the hows and whats for this WP. Great job!
